Being a local business owner is incredibly rewarding. There is a sense of pride knowing what you do impacts people's lives in the community in a positive way. I am reminded of this every time we unlock our doors at Buds and Bows. Being a local florist in Melbourne Fl is something we are passionate about and will love doing for the rest of our lives. Owning your own business isn't for everyone but we always encourage others to chase their dream after they have considered all of the factors.
More than just flowers
Many people are very good at what they do, whatever that skill may be. You can be an excellent plumber, architect, public speaker, manager, coder or even florist but being in business for yourself isn't for everyone. We love making gorgeous, one of a kind floral arrangements for the locals on the Space Coast but as we quickly learned, owning your own business is much more than just flowers. Buds and Bows has grown from an idea to a kiosk in downtown, to a full size store in Eau Gallie and now we have taken over the unit behind us and expanded! Every choice we make takes incredibly consideration, business knowledge, research and a certain leap of faith that it is good for Buds and Bows. We've learned trusting your gut with some good hard data and fact behind the decision is the best way to go.
Make your own hours
We often hear people who want to leave their office or retail job to start their own business say they are excited to make their own hours and work on their own terms. People have even said it must be great being a florist in Melbourne because all you have to do is wait for flower orders to come in then make them. When we hear that we politely smile and let them know there is a bit more to it than that. When you own your own business, even a local florist shop, your "work hours" never really stop. In the early days of many businesses you end up working more than you would another job because you have to establish a routine, find customers, and learn about all of the things you didn't consider before starting your business. You have to really love what you do to start your own business because it takes a lot of work.
Take the risk
That all being said, it's worth the risk of leaving a comfortable and predictable job to start your own business. If you have that passion in you, the very fuel that burns making you want to do what you do, then go for it. Everything in life is a risk if you really think about it, including owning your own business. It's a challenging way of life, especially at first, but when you get your first customer and see how your product or service positively impacted their life you'll be hooked and never look back.
